Most of us relate Thanksgiving with turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and stuffing...especially, the stuffing of our faces with the foregoing feast of savory comestibles.

  But most importantly, it's also a time to ponder the things we're grateful for. Family and Home often peak the gratuity list, but this holiday season, how about a little helping of thanks for something that protects both your family and home? I'm referring to the unpretentious smoke detector.

  With all the cooking performed on Thanksgiving Day, it's no shock that the average number of household fires more than doubles (2.1 x) that of all days other than Thanksgiving. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 2,000 residential fires were reported in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day and lead to 10 deaths, 50 injuries and an estimated $28 million in property damage.

  Thankfully, a functioning smoke detector in your home goes a long way in providing protection for you and your family. Unfortunately not all homes have them and some aren't in working order.

The following tips may help ensure a safe Thanksgiving Day.

1. Working Smoke Detectors.  The following guidelines from the National Fire Protection Agency include installing a smoke detector in every bedroom, within ten feet outside of each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. 

  Once your sure of proper placement, test your smoke detectors monthly. It is recommended to change the batteries every six months (or whenever you change your clock for Daylight Saving Time). Finally have the detectors replaced every 10 years or if they do not sound when tested.

 

2. Remove Fire Hazards.  Remove anything near the stove or cooking areas that could be flammable, including oven mitts, wooden utensils, plastic bags or towels.

3. Keep a Fire Extinguisher. Be acquainted with how the extinguisher works and educate your family to use it as well.
