Save Energy and Money, with Ceiling Fans Year Round

Ceiling fans move air and help people feel cooler in summer. Many people are not aware that they can also be used to aid a warmer feeling in winter, and provide opportunity to save electricity year round.

Create a Breeze

In summer we use ceiling fans to creates a breeze effect. It will help evaporate perspiration from the skin and cool it a couple of degrees. To create cooling, the blades should move air down on people, usually by rotating counter-clockwise when viewed from below.

Most ceiling fans will have a button for changing direction. If your fan has this switch, the fan can be used to create warmth in the winter. Warm air in a home rises, so the fan will circulate warm air from the ceiling down towards people without the wind-chill effect of the air blowing on people. Flip the directional switch to reverse direction causing the downturned edges of the blades to lead. The blades will turn clockwise on most fans.

Ceiling Fans are Low Energy Use

Ceiling fan motors utilize less energy than AC units and furnaces, so every degree they cool or warm "costs" less. Using ceiling fans is a great way to stay comfortable at the same time save electricity and money. However, don't forget to turn them off when no one is in the room, moving the air around an empty room has no benefit. Use speed control for the fan and a dimmer switch for the lighting to save even more money.
