Project Spotlight: Safe, Code-Compliant Power for a Selbyville Boat Lift

Our team recently visited a homeowner on Keenwik Road in Selbyville, Delaware, who is preparing for a bulkhead replacement and needed a safe, reliable plan for powering his boat lift.

During the evaluation, we found the existing lift circuit was fed with 12-2 UF cable on a standard 20-amp, 2-pole breaker—without GFCI protection and without an insulated equipment grounding conductor, both of which are critical for dockside safety.

To bring this setup up to modern safety standards, our proposal includes:

Installing a 20-amp, 2-pole GFCI breaker in the home’s Square D Homeline panel.

Running PVC-coated MC cable to the edge of the home, then piping to the lift to avoid submersion during high tide.

Fishing new 12 THHN conductors from a junction point at the home out to the lift.

While reviewing the home’s electrical system, we also noted the Homeline panel—installed in 2012—was equipped with AFCI breakers but lacked whole-home surge protection, so we provided an upgrade option. The homeowner also requested pricing for a new dockside receptacle for maintenance tools, which we included.

The homeowner shared that he appreciated how smoothly the work went and how clean and professional the installation looked.
